One of the most beautiful neoclassical-style buildings in Athens house the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. It was converted into a museum in order to shelter the collections of Antonis Benakis and now houses a unique exhibition of Greek culture arranged diachronically from prehistory to the 20th century. The museum includes three permanent unique collections that refer to Prehistoric, Ancient Greek and Roman Art, Byzantine Art and Historic Heirlooms.

The collection of Prehistoric, Ancient Greek and Roman antiquities includes several exhibits from the dawn of Prehistory to the end of the Roman era such as gold jewels, collection of vases and sculptures, unique coins, outstanding examples of miniature work in faience and ivory, examples of glasswork, marble portraits and funerary steles.

The exceptionally rich Byzantine collection links the ancient Greek world to that of modern Greece and is divided into two groups. The first group includes unique examples of bronze and silver household and ecclesiastical vessels, miniature sculptures and enamels, ceramics, manuscripts etc. The second group includes Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, a number of household vessels from the early Byzantine period, a collection of Byzantine jewellery as well as a large group of crosses, reliquaries, amulets and miniature steatite icons.

The collection of historical heirlooms recreates the history of modern Greece from the end of the 18th century onwards. Many of the objects are connected with the Philhellenic movement and others date to the reigns of King Otho and King George. It includes also authentic swords and other weapons which belonged to the heroes of 1821, personal belongings such as Ioannis Kapodistrias’s seal and Lord Byron's pistols, manuscripts written by the poets Dionysios Solomos, Constantine Cavafy, Kostis Palamas, and Yannis Ritsos, and the Nobel prize certificates and gold medals won by the poets George Seferis and Odysseus Elytis.

Frissiras Museum opened its doors to the public in December 2000 and is the only Museum for Contemporary European Painting in Greece. The Museum was founded by Vlassis Frissiras, and it is currently housing over 4000 pieces of art. Its large collection constitutes the core of its temporary exhibitions that change every few months.

The museum is housed in a renovated, neo-classical style building. Spread out over four floors, very well lit by a combination of excellent natural light, and well thought out interior lighting. Each room had plenty of space, and the art was laid out perfectly. Frissiras Museum is a unique place to visit, especially if you are an art enthusiast. The founder of the museum, Vlassis Frissiras, started collecting works by young Greek visual artists in 1978, with the resolute aim of putting together a collection made up exclusively of paintings centered on two axes: the human form and body, and representation, i.e. the figurative art that reinstates a method of painting which has been more or less marginalized by newer forms of art. In the 1990s, his interest turned to European artists. The major offer of the museum also lies at its function as a conservatory that promotes interest in Arts, and for that reason it frequently hosts various cultural events and art-related seminars.

In the museum's exhibition grounds you can chronologically navigate through the four levels of the building, while a large collection of weapon systems can also be discovered in the open-air areas around the premises.

On the 1st floor you can see tributes to Antiquity, the Alexandrian Times, Byzantium, Frankish Rule, Ottoman Domination, the Greek Revolution of 1821, the New Hellenic State, the Balkan Wars, the First World War, the Asia Minor Campaign, the Greek-Italian War, the German Invasion, the Battle of the Forts, and the Battle of Crete.

The Mezzanine is dedicated to the action and contribution of the Greeks to the success of the Allied operations against Axis forces during the Second World War. It includes themes for the Sacred Company, El Alamein, Rimini, the action of the Navy and the Air Force. The tribute to World War II ends with the Occupation, Resistance, and the Liberation. These are followed by a tribute to the Greek contribution to the UN mission in Korea and also a special room devoted to the struggles of the Hellenism of Cyprus over the centuries. Finally, the tour ends with the collection of bravery medals.

A large collection of uniforms is displayed on the ground floor and in the reception area, while a special room is devoted to the Greek Army officer Petros Z. Saroglos and his rare collection of weapons concerning the Greek Revolution, the European Renaissance and the Napoleonic Wars, as well as weapons from various European countries, the Muslim world, the Far East, and weapons of primitive peoples of Oceania.
